Fund Raising Dinner

On Tuesday night our church was putting on a fund-raising dinner to continue raising money for the new building that is being constructed. We paid to attend and there were more opportunities to give throughout the night. In typical African tradition, there was an "auction" to bring in some more funds. This is not your American idea of an auction. Throughout the night people gave money to have others dance, or stand in front, as well as gave money to avoid having to dance or stand in front. There were bids placed by people or groups to see who could cut the cake. Cake cutting here at events is a big deal. It is like at American weddings, pictures are taken, everyone stands around to watch, those that are cutting the cake all try to push the knife down together for the first cut, it is great.

One of the best things about the night was that the dress code was "African." Kyle and I were glad to be taken to shop for some African clothes and excited to get all dressed up. Our friend Rhona helped us pick out some great threads and so many people told us that were "looking smart" (that is their way of saying "you look nice") throughout the evening.

The highly anticipated cake

We were glad that we could be a part of this night and fellowship with new friends. I m not sure how much money came in from ticket sales but in addition to tickets, 1.2 million shillings was raised. Impressive huh? That works itself out to be around 500 dollars which is not too bad, but fundraising will continue.
