Running

Now I first must say that this is not a post to brag about the fact that we went running. Kyle and I haven't gone running since we left the states, save for the times we had to make runs to the toilet. Because of all these runs to the toilet (no pun intended) we haven't really needed to go running. Now that we are back on somewhat of an "American diet" and all the ice cream we have been consuming we decided to begin running again.  If I were a reader of this blog I would probably skip over this entry just because of the title alone...but I am a writer on this blog so I do what I want...as long as Kyle says its ok.

Before we began our run we tried to prepare ourselves for stares and yelling, I tried to be as conservitive as possible without wearing a sweat suit. We set out not knowing where to go so we just went where the wind took us. I spent most of my time looking down, trying to avoid animal and human waste, pot holes, rocks, or broken glass. The times I did look I up I avoided looking at people because I was sure to make eye contact with several of them.

It is uncommon to see anyone running on the roads for exercise, we have seen a couple of Ugandan guys running since we have been here, but they are probably training for something. Hence, all the stares and the people yelling "mzungu" (white) as we went along. We even got to have some cheering for us today as we ran. It was helpful for me to think that I was on the white team and Kyle was on the purple team, I would have totally won the race if it wasn't for the fact I did not want to be more than a yard away from him so he could protect me if something went down.

We are still trying to get the lay of the land around our house and we went to a neighborhood we had never been in before. It was a productive outing and we enjoyed being out in our community. We are feeling more and more comfortable in our new city and are glad to know some of the names of the shop keepers around our house.

Don't worry...I will not be giving an update every time we go running, especially because I will have to work up some confidence and boldness before we go out again.
