Last Saturday we got to attend a wedding for some friends of ours. Godwin’s, the groom, was someone we met our first trip to Uganda in 2010 when he was on staff at UCF. He was very influential in getting us the house that we live in, and is always willing to help us in any way he can. We have been anticipating their big day and were able to learn much about how weddings are done in Uganda. One thing we learned is that weddings have planning committees that are involved in helping to raise funds and make sure that no detail has been overlooked. Erin and I were on the committee and that was very informative as well.
The day of the wedding arrived and we planned to be at the church at one when the invitation had stated. When we arrived, there were not many people there which was not surprising for us as we have seen this aspect of the culture many times. What was most surprising was that we knew how many people were invited and even by the time the ceremony finished only about half of the total guests attended the wedding.
The ceremony was beautiful and not too different from ceremonies we are used to, the only real difference was that offering was taken. That and I looked over at one point to see a chicken wandering around the sanctuary.
After the wedding the bridal party went to go take pictures. The reception was at a different venue and was scheduled to start at 4. We were advised to go home and plan on the reception starting at 4:30. So we went home, I even took a nap and we ate a little snack before heading to the reception. The reception started right around 5 and was again not too different than what we are used to in the states. All the invited guests had shown up for the reception to celebrate, dance, eat and congratulate the new couple. We had a great time celebrating.
